Educational settings have changed over the decades due to evolving technologies being introduced to schools, however, the physical infrastructure of traditional schools has seen little advancement. Some of the world's most innovative schools explore the architectural and classroom design features that foster a learning environment most conducive to modern learning.

Outdoor Learning Spaces
A study by Kuo et. al (2018) determined that classroom engagement was significantly better after lessons in nature. Schools were encouraged to use outdoor learning during the Covid-19 pandemic, however the adoption of this practice still sees its limitations.

Flexible Learning Spaces
At the larger school level, the development of dynamic learning environments include community spaces, media labs, rooftop study areas, outdoor amphitheaters, and cafés that are optimized for flexibility.
In the classroom furniture on wheels, movable walls, and efficient uses of space to allow for different modes of learning.

Sustainability & Green Design
Use of natural building materials, integration with the natural landscape, and environmentally friendly design are trends that are emerging for classrooms of the future. Research has shown that students in "green buildings" have higher environmental knowledge and better behaviours.

The traditional student and teacher roles are set to evolve in the 21st Century classroom. We look at ways that the students become designers of their learning, teachers become mentors and facilitators, and community integration becomes an essential part of the classroom structure.

In the facilitator model, the teacher helps learners construct their own learning with minimal intervention and to a point where the learners may not need the facilitator at all.

Community Connections
The 21st century classroom strives to bring "real world experiences" into the class. An example of this ethos is Denmark's Ørestad College, which brings "a variety of innovative teaching spaces and study environments integrated with public functions that draw the surrounding community and businesses in, and encourages interdisciplinary learning, communication and interaction between students and teachers."

Student Well-being
The Artemis project at Melbourne Girls Grammar School is specifically intended to promote holistic physical, mental, social and spiritual wellness in both the student and staff population. The architects were tasked with creating various sized informal and formal ‘Me Zones', specifically to support wellness. These spaces were designed to be part of the pedagogical model of empowering girls.

The emergence of new technologies during the Covid-19 pandemic has fast-tracked their existence in today's classrooms.

Immersive Experiences
Immersive experiences will be the next leading trend in digital tools entering the K-12 landscape. Immersive Experiences such as VR, AR and MR allow students to explore real-world learning experiences in a more realistic space. Such engaging content will help students develop new skills while providing engaging learning opportunities to enhance learner motivation.

Hybrid Learning
Flexible system that allows both in-person and remote learning to exist together. The use of AI will also help to create individualized learning where the teacher is no longer the lone source of information. Modifications to technologies for videoconferencing, LMS systems, and classroom management will support a hybrid model of learning and support the varying future needs of students and families.

Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL)
With children being exposed to digital devices at younger ages, GBL allows students to acquire knowledge through interactive and engaging learning opportunities that help to motivate and enhance student learning. Learners work through subject matter while systems identify areas of excellence and weakness that may require further support. Examples include Minecraft for Education, where students learn to problem solve, communicate, code and develop future workplace skills through a popular gaming platform.

Demonstration of Learning
Students will have opportunities to demonstrate their learning through a variety of new, innovative and creative methods. Some tools already in existence will become more readily accessible in classrooms. Creative demonstrations of learning can include:
